Live Free or Die in the Street!
New Hampshire Ave. at Hamilton Street

Long gone, this sign is what started my interest. How could pedestrians possibly be safer in a city where the crosswalk signs are so badly mangled. This sign went from bad to worse to flattened into the pavement. Then, it disappeared.

Update - July 7, 2003: the sign is gone, gone, gone. It lives only in memory and these pictures now. Perhaps the 4th of July festivities and fireworks ended it, but we may never know . . .

My favorite crosswalk sign is up New Hampshire Ave. just before it intersects North Capitol Street. For weeks it was tipped over and crumpled, and I finally got a chance to take some pictures of it. A couple of weeks after that, the crumpled part had been shorn off.

So, I'm taking pictures of the sign one day, and a guy comes up to me and makes a comment about the way the city spends its money. Turns out he was an off-duty cop. I said that it isn't so bad that the city spends its money on these signs - but it would be worth it if people actually did stop for pedestrians and make it safe for them.

For weeks, months, a long time anyway, the sign was like this.

Then, one day, there was a new surprise awaiting the local walking people!

Who needs the pesky bottom part of the sign?
